The Area
Recently, this part of the Highlands
has become known as Monarch
of The Glen Country, thanks to the publicity it has received
from the BBC series filmed there. However, as you'll discover, it's
much more than a spectacular filmset...
Aviemore, which is within the Badenoch &
Strathspey region, really does have something for everyone. Despite
being easily reached from the north or south by road or rail, the
area gives one a true feel for the wilderness and spectacular scenery
that the Highlands are so well known for.

The Caingorm Mountains, which lie within
the recently established Cairngorm
National Park dominate the area and are the setting for a huge
range of outdoor activities. Aviemore is the main resort town for
the Cairngorms
Skiing Area, which boasts Britain's fastest and highest mountain
railway. Aside from the skiing, hillwalking, mountain biking, summer
& winter climbing, windsurfing,
canoeing and sailing, fishing and golf are all popular pastimes
for visitors to the area.
If you are looking for some slightly
less "active" activities, there is plenty for you too.The
Strathspey
Steam Railway is a popular attraction and many people come to
the area to visit some of the many distilleries along the Speyside
Whisky Trail

Below the mountains, much of Scotland's
remaining ancient Caledonian Pine forests can be found. Marshland
and lochs are also features of the area. Such a wide range of landscapes
mean that the area is also home to a varied array of wildlife. Red
deer, reindeer, osprey,
eagles, otters and pine martens can all be found in the area. If
you're not lucky enough to spot the animals yourself, or you just
want to do it the easy way, a trip to the Higland
Wildlife Park is an excellent way to spend a day.
Please have a look at The
Cairngorms Chamber of Commerce Website for more ideas of what
there is to see and do in the area.
If you want to tour a little further
afield in the Highlands, you'll find Eriskay a good base to start
from: Inverness, Fort William, The Isle of Skye and Loch Ness are
just a few of the well know sights that you can reach.
